Festival on new languages of the international contemporary scene, Primavera dei Teatri is placed in Castrovillari, a peripheral town in Calabria, one of the most disadvantaged regions of Italy, always cut off from the most significant cultural currents that run through Europe.
Founded in 1999, the festival is now considered one of the leading events in the Italian artistic panorama. Thanks to a courageous and rigorous project, which has always aimed to present the best of the new international production, Primavera dei Teatri has now become an essential reference point for professionals, critics, artists and for the audience coming from all over Italy and from abroad. The festival is now an “outpost” in the South for new creativity, a place for meetings and exchanges between artists, professionals and audience.
Primary goals are to contribute to the process of renewing the international scenic language and to operate for generational change in the field of the performing arts. In this direction, the festival offers multiple residencies opportunities for national and international artists, also through the numerous networks of which it is a partner.
At the same time, the festival wants to give its contribution to the democratic, social and cultural growth of its territory and of the whole southern Italy. The festival works in collaboration with many international partners and operates in co-production with the main Italian cultural institutions. Since its first edition it has been supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
